...or does the 1M look way better than the M235i
The 1M looks like a 1 series that's had some frankensteining done to it, much in the way the E30 M3 does.
I know the M235i isn't an M car in the same way the 1M is, but the 2 series is meant to be what the 1 series coupes were.
Also I just can't make myself like that front end. It's like they pulled it down from the middle of the grilles. It's a much cleaner design, but I think that's what I dislike about it

The 1M is a sawed off shotgun of the M3. The M235i is a cleaner and smoother design, but it's more anonymous.

I like that a lot. I think one of my other main problems with it is the space between the top of the rear arch and the Hofmeister kink. I now they were trying to be 2002esque wight eh size of the greenhouse and overall shape, but it looks too artificially leaned forward for that

Not just you. The 1M is a beautiful car, and in my opinion the E82 is much better looking than the current 2 series. The E82 in person feels like something special, F22 just looks and feels bloated.

I thought the M235i and 2 series in general was supposed to be like the 2002...

They're one of the only modern BMWs I actually like

I haven't seen an F22 in person yet, but yeah the 1Ms are cool as hell in person

Even the 135 is a good looking car. Shame the most of the ones for sale are greyscale, they look fantastic in actual colors.

Yeah, but I just feel like the 1 series is more like the 2002, the shapes seem way closer to me
The 1 is more like a two door sedan, while the 2 is more of a coupe

Yeah, BMWs in general are cursed with being mostly plain colours, and while they still look good, they're so good when they're not

I have a strong aversion to greyscale cars in general. There are a few that look really good in black/grey/white, but usually it seems like a waste.

I like them on their own, but the sea of plain colours on the road is depressing

Of course it does. There is no M2 yet.

Christ, have we reached the point where people look at the 1 series as not-that-bad?
In my eyes, it's too bulgy. It looks like a bigger car that just got squeezed a lot, it has a sagging side skirt, it's just awful.

IMO the M235i looks great from the B Pillar forward. The rear quarter just looks off. Specifically the wheel arch. When it was unveiled BMW said it was faster around the Ring than the 1M. I have yet to see any publication verify that though since it came out.
The 1M looks fantastic minus the headlights. This is what I see everytime I see one from the front.

I'm probably the most biased person to offer an opinion, but I prefer the looks of the 2 Series. I'll admit, BMW's press photos are terrible. Even the Melbourne Red paint they show off looks completely different in person. Get up close, and the M235i is rather pretty.

The M235i is definitely more classicaly good looking, but that's because, generally speaking, the M-sport's are the prettiest, with the actual M's always seeming overly aggressive for aggressiveness sake (I firmly maintain the 335is is far better looking than the E92 M3, in the same type of relationship with the M3 much more carnal).
Of note, the 1M is VERY color dependent. One of my director's has a white 1M he's had since new (and will almost surely never sell) and I've got to say white is not a flattering color on it. It looks like a short person took a ton of steroids, aggressive, but not exactly pretty. In black where the lines blend it looks soooo much better. Why does BMW feel the need to over style the M's so much?

When they were knew, all I heard was everyone going on about how awkward they looked, like a pot bellied pig. I liked em.
